- Warehouse & Co.’s 1930s WPA Double Knee Denim Trousers are inspired by workwear produced under the Works Progress Administration during the 1930s. Within the WPA’s large-scale employment programmes, garments for blue-collar workers were made in government-supported “Sewing Rooms” and often carried labels reading “Made by W.P.A. Sewing Rooms, Not Be Sold.” These pieces were not designer garments, but practical clothing made for labour, repair, and daily use.
The design reflects the unique character of WPA clothing, where military workwear served as the base and was often modified through practical arrangements. Unlike many workwear pieces of the period that relied heavily on chain-stitch construction, Sewing Room garments frequently used lock-stitch sewing, giving them a different mood from standard factory-made workwear. This quiet, handmade character gives the trousers a warm and honest feel rooted in pre-war American work clothing.
Made from 8×10 light-ounce selvedge denim, estimated to be around 11oz, these trousers feature a double-knee front, shaped hip construction, and belt loops made using the selvedge edge. Each detail reflects the functional design language of 1930s work pants while staying true to Warehouse & Co.’s approach to faithfully reproducing vintage garments with depth, research, and respect.
