- A signature style from Samurai Jeans, their indigo jacquard work shirt returns this time with a specially woven Japanese pattern combining the traditional “Narihira” diamond motif with goldfish.
The fabric uses a double-weave construction, combining two lightweight layers into a single cloth to create a soft and comfortable hand. Dark and light indigo rope-dyed yarns are used across the surface, while the reverse is woven in white. The Narihira diamond and goldfish motifs are formed with deeper indigo yarns, allowing the pattern to gradually come to light as the indigo fades with wear.
The Narihira diamond, or Narihira-bishi, is a traditional Japanese geometric motif associated with "Ariwara no Narihira", a renowned poet of the Heian period (794–1185) whose clothing was often depicted with this distinctive diamond pattern. Diamond motifs have been used in Japan since ancient times, and Narihira-bishi is traditionally associated with wishes for prosperity, healthy descendants and protection from illness. Samurai Jeans brings this historic motif together with the playful goldfish pattern, giving the fabric a distinctly Japanese character that becomes more visible with age.
