- The SJST-SC01 T-shirt is part of the “Samurai Cotton” series, a project that began in 2008 with the aim of creating a fully Made in Japan garment — from cotton cultivation in Hyogo to spinning, dyeing, knitting, and sewing. Simple in appearance, the focus is placed on the texture and character of the fabric itself.
The fabric is made using a specially spun Samurai Cotton slub yarn, slowly knitted into a heavyweight jersey with a subtle dry hand feel and an uneven nep texture. Natural cotton specks are intentionally left in the fabric, giving it a unique appearance and raw character. Despite the firmness and texture, the fabric still retains a softness and warmth that gradually becomes more comfortable with wear.
The dyeing and construction follow the same careful approach. The Natural color is left unbleached to preserve the original tone of the cotton itself, while the “Kuromame” and “Chestnut” colors are garment dyed using traditional Kyoto natural dyeing ( Kusakizome ) techniques mixed with natural dyes, creating a deeper and warmer color tone. For the sewing details, four-needle flat seam construction and all-cotton thread are used throughout, balancing comfort with durability.
At first glance, it feels like a very simple T-shirt. But behind it is a long process involving cotton growers, craftsmen, and skilled makers across Japan. Rather than standing out through excessive details, the character of the SJST-SC01 comes quietly through the fabric, texture, and the feeling it develops over time.
