- Samurai’s special limited-edition series based on the twelve animals of the Japanese zodiac began with the Year of the Rat model in 2020. In 2026, the seventh edition celebrates the Year of the Horse, drawing its inspiration from Western and cowboy jeans. The familiar rugged character of Samurai denim is combined with details associated with traditional cowboy clothing, giving this annual model a distinctive identity of its own.
Built from Samurai’s 17oz Zero+ selvedge denim, an updated interpretation of the original “Bushido” denim. While retaining the same substantial 17oz weight and pronounced slubby character, the No.5 yarns are spun with a harder twist and dyed in a deeper indigo. The result preserves the uneven surface and rough texture associated with the Zero Series, while giving the denim a subtly sharper and deeper character.
Built around the details of vintage cowboy jeans, the design features rope-pattern buttons, flat rivets and a wide scoop-shaped watch pocket. The back pockets feature Samurai’s distinctive “Hisho” arcuate stitching, adding a western element to the design. For the pocket bags, Samurai uses a dense cotton fabric traditionally known in Japan as “bafu”, or “horse cloth” — originally named after the durable cloth placed beneath a horse saddle. Its use here creates a subtle connection to the Year of the Horse theme while adding another considered detail to this limited-edition model.
