- The Freewheelers Lot S601XX is based on a mid-war denim model produced around 1944–45, when wartime material restrictions changed the construction of jeans in the United States. To conserve metal and other resources, details such as buckle backs, crotch rivets, and some pocket rivets were removed, while substitute fabrics were used for parts such as the pocket bags. This model carefully recreates those simplified wartime specifications and the practical construction of jeans made during that period.
The original 14oz selvedge denim uses thick, uneven yarns in both the warp and weft to recreate the rough texture of wartime denim. The warp is rope-dyed in a deep, slightly black-toned indigo, designed to develop strong vertical fading with wear. Woven slowly at low tension on vintage shuttle looms, the fabric has a firm, textured hand and a naturally hairy surface that will soften and gain greater contrast over time.
The construction follows the simplified specifications of wartime jeans, with iron laurel wreath doughnut buttons, stamped rivets, hidden back-pocket rivets, and no rivets on the coin pocket. An original herringbone fabric is used for the pocket bags, while a single-sided red “V.WEST” tab is placed on the right back pocket. The jeans are sewn entirely with mustard-yellow cotton thread in several different gauges, completing the period-correct appearance.
