- A signature work shirt from Freewheelers, the “Gemsa” takes its name from a real-life craftsman active in the American hot rod scene during the 1920s, known for building and modifying performance parts for four-cylinder engines. The name reflects Freewheelers’ deep respect for early American work culture and mechanical history, giving the shirt a strong sense of period character beyond its appearance alone.
Built from Freewheelers’ original cotton Hard Twist Kersey, the fabric uses thick slub yarns that are tightly twisted and woven at high density. This construction gives the cloth a substantial body together with a distinctive dry, crisp hand feel. The surface is also carefully singed to reduce excess fuzz, creating a sharper and more pronounced twill texture unique to the fabric.
Drawing from the details of 1930s work shirts, the shirt features asymmetric chest pockets, with a flap pocket on the right and a layered double-pocket construction on the left. Period-inspired details include 15mm urea buttons, side gussets and stitch run-off at the hem. Combined with its slightly longer body and substantial fabric weight, the Gemsa can also be worn as a shirt jacket, making it a highly versatile piece for the cooler season.
