- The Type 1 denim jacket remains one of the most iconic styles in denim history. Originally produced from the 1920s through the early 1950s, the design evolved over time, with details varying depending on the era. During World War II, material restrictions led to simplified specifications, creating what collectors now refer to as the “WWII models,” produced roughly between 1942 and 1946 in several transitional versions.
This Freewheelers S506XX 1944–45 jacket is inspired by the mid-war specification, capturing the balance of practicality and restrained detailing that defined denim jackets of the period.
One of the defining features of this model is the use of four laurel-wreath donut buttons and a simplified left chest pocket without a flap, reflecting wartime production changes. The silhouette has been slightly lengthened compared to vintage originals, making it easier to wear while maintaining classic proportions.
The jacket is made from an original 14oz selvedge denim developed entirely from the yarn up. The warp yarn is spun from a cotton blend centered on American cotton, creating a subtle nep texture. Dyed in a deeper indigo shade, the fabric is designed to age gradually while developing strong vertical fading with subtle speckled fading, expressing the authentic character of wartime denim.
